Intro We've all heard the horror stories about PC's picking up virus' while your happily surfing sites on the internet, but while some are just annoying (opening pop up windows and showing you things you don't want to see), some can be destructive - removing and replacing system files, or even syping on you as you type in your passwords. In this article we delve into a few techy solutions to keeping your pc clean and safe from unwanted intrusions. Virus's and trojans These strange words are basically small computer programs that can download themselves onto your PC using several methods. From email attachments (ever opened an e-mail only to find an attachement that seemingly does nothing?), file attachments (eg word files with virus' embedded in them), or programs which download whilst your surfing other websites. 1. Get yourself a firewall A firewall is a piece of software which runs on your PC all of the time that you are connected to the internet. It acts to stop unwanted attacks from websites and hackers trying to gain access to your PC. If you have unfortunately downloaded a dialler program then a firewall could stop this from connecting to the internet. The firewall acts like a selective filter, only allowing the programs that you want to gain access to the internet. Zonelabs firewall can be downloaded for free here, alternatively you can select to pay for the software and have antivirus protection included. Download Zonelabs firewall here 2. Protect against Spyware Spyware is software which runs on your pc and spies on you! It will report your keystrokes back to a spy server on the internet where they could find out your passwords or even worse - your bank details. In order to protect yourself against spyware we suggest downloading Spybot - search and destroy. You can download Spybot here. 3. Defend against Virus' Virus' can wreak havoc on your pc, changing filenames and even making your pc completely useless. Worse still you could loose all of your personal files and risk sending the virus on to your friends the next time you send them an email. If you dont already have antivirus software we recommend getting one now. Check out Symantec for their antivirus software. 4. Remove Cookies Cookies are small files which websites place on your computer to track you the next time you visit their website. These are used by nearly all e-commerce sites and its the reason that they can welcome you back to their site as if they remember you. You can remove cookies from within internet explorer from the tools menu ->internet options->delete cookies. Please note - if you do remove cookies then some websites will not remember your login details if you have selected to automatically login rather than type in your username and password.
